Wait a Minute, Let's Celebrate Summer!

As most of my friends and family know, I'm not a fan of summer. I'm not a fan of Florida Summer is maybe more accurate. It's hot. It's sticky. The dog can't walk between 7am and 8pm with his 10lbs of fur... We gotta close all our blinds to keep the apartment cooler... It's a challenging time for me.

But the other day, during a good old beach day with franz, some stranger offered us watermelon. This watermelon turned around my summer brain. I realized we need to milk summer for all it's worth and learn to love it for what it is before it's over.

"Dylan! We gotta celebrate summer! With watermelons! And pina coladas!" (I've never even cared for watermelons that much with all other fruit options available, but with it's juicy coolness as well as its summer-food stereotype, it won me over). I went on brainstorming what things make summer summer to come up with hot dogs, lemonade, fruity salads...

We gotta swim in the pool and dip in the ocean... Sit on the beach (under an umbrella) and take out the old kayaks that are covered with bugs and branches and at least see how far we can go before the blue one takes on too much water.

So that I actually did this morning. I lathered up with sunscreen, popped on a hat, sunglasses and a shirt (going out at the beach is much different than my 18 year old self. No skin cancer, please) and dragged that hunker kayak across the street and onto the beach for a nice little paddle.

Things that are making it more bearable: hat and sunscreen (I don't know why I'm JUST now discovering the wonders of wearing a hat), umbrellas on the beach, taking water on every walk and even driving to shadier neighborhoods to walk there, iced coffees, and cold showers.

Time to make myself like summer for what it is. What are some of your favorite things about this steamy season that would add to my enjoyment?

All my pictures are of the dog lately so here ya go.

 Oh hey! It's not Hobie!

Tivoli and Rugby

         Adding another great week to the list for my time in Denmark. Last Tuesday, I went to an international gathering for students at DTU (Denmark Technical Institute) at the Cellar Bar. I met a couple cool people there from Belgium (Ruben), Canada, France, and Denmark and met back up with a couple of them on Friday night. We went to see one of their Spanish friends play a Latin set at a bar in the city. On our way there, we were a bit worried at how this place would be considering it was on the street well known for its... Services. But we got to the Luna Bar and it wound up being really fun. The band was actually excellent , and had everyone dancing. Ruben and his friends were a lot of fun to hang out with.          On Saturday, I went to Tivoli, the second oldest theme park, with the family and met Claus' parents and sister there. It's no wonder Tivoli inspired Walt Disney to do his own thing. It's a beautiful  amusement par...

Sunday Times {Plus a Quarterly Review}

A weekly update has now begun! If not for anything but to keep more of journal for ourselves to recap and think about each week. So much happens so quick I don't want to forget all the fun details! This week was my first full week to work with all the crew at my new job. Lots of planning with caseloads and meetings, and such. Excited to get working with the kids more in the next weeks. Dylan started his clinical this week too for his last semester of grad school! Woohoo! He's been killin' it and so close to graduating.  Monday was Labor Day and was a very cozy rainy Oregon day. It's been quite toasty lately, so this actually felt good. So we had a long walk to Peninsula Park for some roses and then hung around the casa making bags and relaxin.  Back to work on Tuesday for a good day and a rocking Crossfit after. I made some chicken tzatziki, a new fav.  Wednesday night we tried a Burmese place nearby after another very hot bike ride.  Thursday we actually went to a c...

Washington Birthday Round 3 {My 35th}

In pure Dylabby fashion, we had a very informal plan to head east to see the Painted Hills, John Day Fossil Beds, John Day River, and desert time, but then as we were packing up the car that morning, we changed our plans and decided to head north to Colchuck Lake in Washington. More chance for seeing the Northern Lights? Autumn colors? Less chance of rattlesnakes biting our dogs? Those were a few of the random reasons that were thrown out there.  We booked a hotel on the drive up for Wenatchee, WA near Leavenworth-- Leavenworth was crazy expensive, later to find out the Oktoberfest reason why. And booking camping in Washington is not fun. If anyone has tips that don’t involve having to book 6months (or even a month) in advance or having to do a whole lottery to get a permit, please let us last-minute travelers know. We did get a good stop in Leavenworth for some German beers, people watching, and a beautiful river walk right in town, and a lovely sunset dinner view.  The next ...
