Summer 2019: Dorothy Coe Visits all 48 States

August 21, 2019, Dorothy Coe checked off a goal from her bucket list of visiting the lower 48 states, with North Dakota as the last. Accompanying her were her husband, James, her children Mike Coe (South Carolina) and Julie Ross (Florida), and granddaughter Abby Ross-Kennedy (FL). Grandson Chris Ross even flew in from Colorado to celebrate the big accomplishment. On this trip, they drove 1000+ miles in just 5 days, ate fresh ice cream from the South Dakota State University Dairy Science Hall, walked across the headwaters of the Mississippi Itasca State Park, visited "the prettiest botanical garden" at McCrory Gardens, and enjoyed time with newlyweds Thomas and Demi Coe in Omaha. Scenery included vast farmland that made these travelers all wonder about North Dakotans' lives, an Amish man bailing hay with his mules, and a starry starry night worth stopping for.

On this trip, I heard so many great stories from Pa and Grandma. I learned that Grandma used to pick cucumbers with her cousins and ride into town on their wagon to sell them. It was reinforced that my Pa remembers way more details than I ever will, as he was able to describe exactly how some old farming tools worked at the Agricultural Heritage Museum, in Brookings, SD. I heard lovely stories about my grandparents sleeping under the stars in the Colorado mountains. I love the story of Grandma, at 15 and newly wed, heading out to Colorado on her own by train. Somehow things got mixed up and Pa didn't find her right away, but they found each other in Denver eventually.

And we're off after all gathering in Atlanta airport!

Tivoli and Rugby

Adding another great week to the list for my time in Denmark. Last Tuesday, I went to an international gathering for students at DTU (Denmark Technical Institute) at the Cellar Bar. I met a couple cool people there from Belgium (Ruben), Canada, France, and Denmark and met back up with a couple of them on Friday night. We went to see one of their Spanish friends play a Latin set at a bar in the city. On our way there, we were a bit worried at how this place would be considering it was on the street well known for its... Services. But we got to the Luna Bar and it wound up being really fun. Sunday Times {Plus a Quarterly Review}

A weekly update has now begun! If not for anything but to keep more of journal for ourselves to recap and think about each week. So much happens so quick I don't want to forget all the fun details! This week was my first full week to work with all the crew at my new job. Lots of planning with caseloads and meetings, and such. Excited to get working with the kids more in the next weeks. Dylan started his clinical this week too for his last semester of grad school! Woohoo! He's been killin' it and so close to graduating. Monday was Labor Day and was a very cozy rainy Oregon day. It's been quite toasty lately, so this actually felt good. So we had a long walk to Peninsula Park for some roses and then hung around the casa making bags and relaxin. Washington Birthday Round 3 {My 35th}

In pure Dylabby fashion, we had a very informal plan to head east to see the Painted Hills, John Day Fossil Beds, John Day River, and desert time, but then as we were packing up the car that morning, we changed our plans and decided to head north to Colchuck Lake in Washington. More chance for seeing the Northern Lights? Autumn colors? Less chance of rattlesnakes biting our dogs? Those were a few of the random reasons that were thrown out there. We booked a hotel on the drive up for Wenatchee, WA near Leavenworth-- Leavenworth was crazy expensive, later to find out the Oktoberfest reason why. And booking camping in Washington is not fun. If anyone has tips that don’t involve having to book 6months (or even a month) in advance or having to do a whole lottery to get a permit, please let us last-minute travelers know. We did get a good stop in Leavenworth for some German beers, people watching, and a beautiful river walk right in town, and a lovely sunset dinner view. The next ...
